The curiosity combined with trepidation was tangible, as this group we encountered during a morning game drive tentatively inspected the waters of the flooded Grumeti River in the private Grumeti Game Reserve. Over the course of about an hour, the group attempted to enter the waters, testing the depths, seeking clues from the muddy flooded water to what was hidden beneath, be it crocodile or hippo. Such folklore rooted in the sincere ancient buddhist beliefs are one of the many attractions to this stunning landlocked Kingdom in the eastern Himalaya. <image:caption>A special ceremony greeted our arrival at the San José de Uchupiamonas community, deep in the upper Amazonia Madidi National Park. Almost all of the community greeted our arrival, with a full to the door main community building. Peering in was this elderly lady, paying her respects to the revered guests who had arrived. Nearby is the excellent Chalalan Eco Lodge which is operated by and supports the community, one of the best examples of a community run project such as this we have seen in the world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Mediterranean Sea has many summer attractions, attracting hundreds of millions of tourists annually. Many head to the Island of Ibiza for its renowned night-life. For our guests seeking such pleasures combined with active adventures we recommended two weekends in Mykonos followed by a mid-week tour of the Cyclades enjoying unique adventures while sailing between the stunning Islands. Based on a superyacht ensured our guests were never far from the coastal clubs in Mykonos, while night cruising ensured that every day between the exhausting partying could reveal a new vista and new adventure!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Lake Akan, Japan</image:title>
<image:caption>Chance encounters like this is what can make a journey so much more memorable. Some places in the world give rise to chance encounters more than others, northern Japan's island of Hokkaido is one such place... Mountain biking through the forests above the beautiful Lake Akan we came across a more elderly yet very jolly group apparently out hiking. Looping back after checking out some of the bubbling thermal geysers deep in the forests we noticed the group, almost statue like, deep in the woods. We realised they were combining meditation with forest bathing, something our group stopped to appreciate and engage in ourselves. These chance moments of stillness turned out to be one of the highlights of a very memorable journey in this remarkably undiscovered part of Japan.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Phobjikha Valley, Bhutan</image:title>
<image:caption>Bhutan is a spectacular country, with a fascinating and vibrant distinct national culture. In each remote valley, one can wander unhindered along barely noticeable but stunning trails, between sleepy villages surrounded by the mighty Himalaya. Encounters such as this are not uncommon, a group of boisterous youths engaging in a popular sport of dart throwing. Testing physical skill with courage (injuries are common), competing local villages naturally gather to pass time, socialise and improve their skills. Guests are encouraged to join in, not as a tourist exercise but because of the genuinely welcoming and curious local culture. All this within walking distance of the phenomenal Gangtey Lodge where we stayed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Pantanal, Brazil</image:title>
<image:caption>The worlds largest tropical wetland area known as the Pantanal is in south western Brazil. Far from it being an isolated conservation area devoid of humanity, it has evolved with local populations whereby there is an unusual but apparently functional combination of normal life with astonishing natural beauty and biodiversity. Floating down a river early one morning hoping to spot an elusive but fairly common jaguar, we came across this jacare caiman munching on a piranha. We spotted a jaguar later in the day which was a wonderful sight. The Pantanal can easily be combined with a visit to Rio de Janeiro and Iguazu Falls which are not too far away.</image:caption>

In the far west of the Highlands, the remote Glen Etive weaves its way beyond Glencoe to the seemingly endless sea loch in Loch Etive. With renowned mountaineering and kayaking, as well as its being used as the backdrop for such moves as Braveheart and Skyfall, Etive is naturally popular. <image:title>Inspiration - Galapagos Islands, Ecuador</image:title>
<image:caption>Galapagos Islands in our experience is one of the most astonishing designations on the planet. Due to its unique geology and being only a few million years old, each Island has its own characteristics and unique aspects. One of the common experiences is that the animals in general are not averse to human presence, they have evolved not to be afraid of our presence. So we can get very close to the seals, birds nesting, the marine iguanas basking on the oceanside rocks and in this instance the other-worldly endemic Galapagos Land Iguana. Combining some time on land at one of the great lodges, with a private yacht charter is in our experience the optimal way to experience these astonishing 'Enchanted islands'.</image:caption>

A geological crucible, with volcanic activity still spewing minerals from the earth's bowels, it is like exploring a different planet. Mineral rich lakes such as Laguna Colorado has islands of borax, and when combined with various algae delivers the most surprising colours imaginable. the algae attract James's Flamingo making the alien landscape even more surreal. Our guide used to prepare the security for heads of state visiting so knows literally every hidden corner and catacomb in a city with immeasurable such secret yet fascinating spots. We arose from a hidden cave deep beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, renowned as being position on the site of the crucifixion of Christ. Thronging with faithful yet determined pilgrims, we were glad of the knowledge of our guide to largely avoid such extremely busy spots and security lines, and to find the more serene corners which helped reveal otherwise hidden truths beneath this city's layers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Gangtey Lodge, Bhutan</image:title>
<image:caption>Bhutan has in recent years been placed on the world map of knowledgable and well travelled adventurers seeking a new and exciting destination. Bhutan is certainly exciting, what they maybe hadn't accounted for was how beautiful, fascinating, welcoming and indeed well managed the country is, and how responsible and sustainable the official approach to tourism is. What is also surprising is the level of accommodation there. International hotel brands such as Aman, Como and Six Senses have beautiful luxury lodges in the country, but there are some independent lodges that provide a more distinct yet very comfortable stay with exceptional levels of comfort and service. One such Lodge is Gangtey Lodge, one of our favourites in the region.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Kathmandu, Nepal</image:title>
<image:caption>On the holy, yet depressingly polluted Bagnati River flowing through Nepal's capital Kathmandu, is the sprawling Pashupatinath hindu temple. Within the complex are numerous shrines, accommodation for ascetic sadhus, and a hospice. Here those near death spend their last mortal days. Within minutes of death, family members and brahmins ritually bathe the body, within hours a pyre is formed where the bodies are then ritually burned on the ghats. At dawn, before the city awakens and the tourists arrive there is a sense of acute stillness during the witnessing of such human dramas which have played out on the banks of this river for millennia.</image:caption>

Beyond Havana is an often forgotten hinterland and wider country, its easy to forget that Cuba is more than 1,000km wide with infrequently visited yet fascinating national parks, mountain ranges, horse riding ranches and spectacular reefs. <image:caption>During a pre-dawn visit to the holy Pashupatinath hindu temple in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, we encountered a group of hindu ascetic holy men, known as sadhus. Baba Ganga Dash as this man is known has lived in the temple complex for nearly 40 years, outwardly renouncing the modern world and living the life os a simple spiritual devotee. The glint in his eyes belies a deeper truth, he travels extensively in the Himalaya and hindu holy lands attending festivals and holy sites, sometimes with overseas guests who fly them in helicopters. <image:caption>The known history of the San people of southern Africa dates back many tens of thousands of years. The unknown history dates back no doubt considerably further. What can be sure is their presence in the stark yet stunning landscapes of the kalahari for as long as can be imagined. With these deep cultural roots come a deep understanding of their environment seeing like other aboriginal people elsewhere the world in both a material and spiritual way concurrently. This image, captured during a 'trance dance' that lasted into the early hours illustrates this connection between the earth and the ethereal spirit world. Used as a method of social cohesion, it also functions to help drive out negative spirits causing illness. <image:title>Inspiration - Mount Everest, Nepal</image:title>
<image:caption>Chomolungma, 'mother goddess of the mountains' in the local language seems a more appropriate name for such a majestic peak that is known in the west as Mount Everest. Cartographer Sir George Everest never even saw the peak a successor in the colonial administration named after him, but to this day, there are many ways for more fortunate travellers to see it. Hiking the base camp route along with the throngs of tourists is best avoided. To get up close and personal we'd recommend getting in from the northern Tibetan side which is much quieter. A remote aerial discovery by plane is a great way to see the mountain, seeing it in its almost divine context it certainly appears as the goddess of the mountains.</image:caption>

However, late in the week they decided to alter the plan insisting on a day and evening in Santorini. Fortunately, we have excellent connections there and arranged fantastic local guides, some short cuts past the crowns, we got the best tables made available and even managed to avoid the worst of the crowds on the notorious chair lifts by timing it well with the three cruise ships our visit coincided with. One is not there to indulge on the interior however. <image:caption>The great Buddhist stupa of Boudhanath sits on the junction of ancient trade routes heading north into Tibet. Since the 1950s and the influx of refugees from Tibet it has become a centre for Tibetan culture in the predominantly hindu Nepali capital. with legends that saw its reaction more than 1,500 years ago and being the largest such stupas in the world, it is not only a sacred site of pilgrimage for faithful buddhism for whom a stupa represents the enlightened qualities of Buddha's mind, it also attracts the myriad tourists visiting the fascinating City.We found if you you choose your time right, sharing the space with the Tibetans was possible, all of whom circumambulate in a clockwise direction while counting prayers on their male prayer beads or using their prayer wheels. In this way they are purifying negative karma and accumulating virtue for this and future lives. A wonderful place and in no way blighted commercialisation or indeed over tourism, in fact there is very little high-end or adventure tourism there at all apart from on its famed ski slopes. We were delighted to discover some well travelled and keen adventure outfitters on Lake Kussharo, who could take us out for an explore in their Canadian canoes despite the sense of foreboding from the imminent squall that was coming in. <image:caption>The northern gateway to the phenomenal Fjordland of Norward, a sailing boat glides out of the expansive harbour of Ålesund late one evening. Superyacht explorations are becoming more common in these waters especially in Fjordland where for sure, using a boat as a base for nautical and shore based adventures is optimal. We also like to point the compass north and head up towards Lofoten area too, there's so much to do on the coastline especially if combined with judicious use of local aviation to hop across some of the more mundane passages and allow the boat to catch up while adventuring inland a little. Just needs creativity, insight and awesome local connections which Dulabab have in Norway.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Batwa Village, Uganda</image:title>
<image:caption>The Echuya Batwa of south western Uganda are traditional indigenous forest dwelling pygmy tribe. The group we visited adjacent to the north side of the Virunga mountains, adjacent to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The tribe traditionally lived within the park boundary but due to the urgent need to conserve the future of the gorillas, some decades ago a decision was made to forcibly relocate the tribe out of their traditional homes, and forests from there they have led a hunter gathering existence for millennia. Displaced and marginalised their future looked bleak. Praveen Moman has been behind community driven sustainable and responsible tourism development in both the Uganda Virunga mountains as well as the Rwanda side. Through the efforts of him and his team some acres have been purchased for the displaced tribe with simple homes having been built, fresh water supplied, education provided for the youngsters and with agricultural space to grow crops for the adjacent Volcanoes Safaris Gahinga lodge that are then sold, they have a sustainable income. The Adventure Travel Conservation Fund which Dulabab supports also gave a grant in suport of this fantastic project that this lady, her daughter and the community there are clearly benefitting enormously from.</image:caption>

Chalalan sincerely takes it to a different and level. Owned by the indigenous people of nearby village San José de Uchupiamonas, it is off the grid with power drawing from a small solar farm and battery house, the local community provide all the delicious organic produce, as well as managing, servicing and providing guides and transportation. There is no better place to stay in this phenomenally biodiverse hotspot, and a visit to the nearby village where the community live with its spotless streets, attentive students in class and warm welcome are a testament to how a sincere approach to ethnic ecotourism can succeed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Mazaruni River, Guyana</image:title>
<image:caption>The name Guyana roughly translates as 'land of the waters' and when exploring its interior it's easy to see why. Numerous rivers tumble from the pristine rainforests of the Guiana Shield in its interior towards to coastline on the edge of the Caribbean further north. This descent from the higher inland areas creates sensational waterfalls, some of the largest in the world, of which Kaieteur Falls is perhaps the most famous. There are immeasurable other spectacular waterfalls such as this one we encountered returning to the capital Georgetown following a reconnaissance at which one can camp and explore the rich flora and fauna of this unique area of vast pristine rainforest.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Dochula Pass, Bhutan</image:title>
<image:caption>Unless a helicopter is chartered, getting across Bhutan requires patience due to its slow, relaxed pace, its winding but safe roads, but more importantly due to the stunning vistas and road-side diversions one excounters along the way. One such vista is at Dochula Pass, on the pass of the road from the valley of the capital Thimpu to the important administrative centre of Punakha in the adjacent valley. The 108 christens were built to memorialise a group of slain Bhutanese soldiers who had died defending the small Himalayan Kingdom from a band of insurgents from neighbouring Assam in India. The violence of the battle seemed a million miles away from the peaceful atmosphere, clear air and breathtaking vista of the mighty Himalaya mountains on the horizon which we enjoyed, before dropping down to our next luxury lodge and fascinating explore of the Punakha Valley later that same day.</image:caption>

Fortunately for us between the islands of Paros and Antiparos the wind is funnelled, creating a steady strong wind that caught the attention of the wind-chasing community in the days of wind surfing, These have most graduated to kielbasa's surfing now and our guests were keen to learn, A former world champion was on hand to provide instruction and get the guests if not skipping along the waves within a few tough hours, certainly on the first rung of the kite-surfing ladder.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Between the south of France and the north of Spain it is easy to overlook the landlocked country of Andorra which is a mistake! A surprising and beautiful Catalan speaking landlocked mountain country in the middle of the Pyrenees range, it is more noted for its winter skiing than summer trekking. Its slopes however ensure good high quality accommodations and service its mountains which are far quieter than the Alps in summer offer outstanding trekking and adventures. During this journey, we arrived in late spring assuring almost nobody else was around, we had the mountains almost to ourselves. <image:title>Inspiration - Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe</image:title>
<image:caption>Rising in the highlands of Angola and Zambia, the mighty Zambezi river abruptly tumbles in the most spectacular way on the border with Zambia and Zimbabwe at Victoria Falls. In the local language it is known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, "The Smoke That Thunders" and it was by this name and its legend that David Livingstone became the first European to witness its smoke and thunder in 1855. Since then it has drawn travellers to its ever changing wonder which during dry season is still spectacular, in fact views unhinged by the stifling mists produced from the crashing water ensure better visibility. But at full flow it is a unique vista. This picture is take from the Zimbabwe side, with the falls coming over the Zambia side the views are better from this perspective. However, optimally we recommend taking a helicopter to see the entire majestic spectacle from the air, then saying low upstream to our favourite luxury lodge to relax and enjoy the waiter pleasures of the Zambezi River.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Paro Takstang, Bhutan</image:title>
<image:caption>Paro Takstang or more commonly known as 'Tiger's Nest' is a sacred monastery complex and place of pilgrimage for Buddhist devotees from across the Himalaya region. Spiritual guide Guru Padmasambhava who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet int he 8th century was said to have completed a silent meditation retreat on its site for more than 3 years. Due to this auspiciousness, the monastery was completed in the 17th century. Within the complex are a number of gompas - meditation halls and some spectacular shrines, dark with the oil from the butter lamps that are permanently lit. Busy with pilgrims and tourists alike, it is best to be there before dawn and with strong legs and some determination one can enjoy the site all to yourself for quite some time before others come huffing and puffing up. Our guide Nyima is pictured here without whom such insight and access in a country such as this would be impossible.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Krakow, Poland</image:title>
<image:caption>Unlike many great European cities, Krakow in Poland was not ravaged during world war two due to it being the regional headquarters of the occupying military. Along with Prague in the Czech Republic and the very charming Tallinn in Estonia, it is without doubt one of Europes most stunning and unspoiled historical cities and a fine place to visit during an Eastern European luxury supercar road trip!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Maui, Hawaii</image:title>
<image:caption>A visit to the Hawaiian Islands normally often includes a stop through the United States. Technically then on an internal flight one lands in Hawaii but it doesn't feel like the United States. Despite the cars, sign posts and major hotel chains being familiarly American our Maori driver was from New Zealand, the local outrigger canoes I could see in the water were Polynesian. Indeed, the indigenous culture is Polynesian and the longer we were there it made more sense to view these beautiful islands as being aligned to that culture rather than the American culture. This exclusive luxury villa in the Wailea-Makena neighbourhood of Maui served as a delightful base from which to explore the fascinating Island of Maui, but using helicopters landed on the adjacent golf course, further island discoveries.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Sossusvlei, Namibia</image:title>
<image:caption>Home to certainly Africa's highest sand dune, perhaps the highest in the world, the Sossusvlei Desert in Namibia is a stunning natural environment.Being the highest there is a natural draw so it can get busy. We ensured we were first through the national park gates in the morning, and charged with some strong coffee made it to the summit of what is known as 'Big Daddy' well before other visitors. This gave a unique opportunity to soak in the stillness, and seemingly endless vistas. When others started arriving it took just two minutes to run down the steep sided slopes to the famous 'Dead Vlei' petrified forest far below before a private bush breakfast.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Tulum, Mexico</image:title>
<image:caption>Tulum on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico is now very much on the international slightly bohemian beach side loving travel scene for good reason. There are many wonderful private villas or boutique resorts to enjoy the laid back, tropical vibe much further south than the commercial resorts and busyness of Cancun and Playa de Carman. Tulum began way before the hippies in the 1960s arrived however, it was one of the great final settlements and temple sites of the Mayan civilisation. This temple, facing east and the rising sun over the Caribbean Sea was visited at dawn during an exclusive private visit with guests.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Scilly Iles, England</image:title>
<image:caption>England has many surprises for those willing to escape the London / Cotswolds / Stonehenge experiences! From the rugged fells of the beautiful Lake District in the north to amazing coastlines like in Dorset in the south where dinosaur fossils line the cliffs. Not very well known are the Scilly Isles in the far south west, a few hours ferry ride from Cornwall. With a unique position right in the gulf stream current coming across the Atlantic from the Caribbean, the waters are unusually rich and indeed comparatively warm. This gives rise to an almost sub-tropical climate feeling and looking more like Bermuda than England. It is a truly astonishing place nd free from cars and much modernity and great place to recharge and relax. We were fortunate to visit by private helicopter, landing with exclusive permissions far from the regular airport, and being whisked straight to a beach-side cream tea.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Cabo San Lucas BCS, Mexico</image:title>
<image:caption>Cabo San Lucas enjoys a wonderful location, right at the southern end of the Baja Peninsula on the west coast of Mexico, and just a couple of hours flight time from Los Angeles. This villa in a quiet private community is one of our favourites in the area, with exclusive beach access and just 20 minutes away from the party scene should guests want it, it offers a great balance or tranquility combined with endless excitement!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seen from our exclusive cliff-side luxury villa, the beach and wild surf behind is silhouetted in the late evening light. Morocco is becoming more popular as a winter destination for not only culture and relaxing, but also for surfing. With consistently swell coming from the north Atlantic, and many surf spots some well know, others hidden, the area around Taghazout offers a perfect location for some mid-winter relaxing and surfing just a few hours south of chilly Europe.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Inspiration - Altiplano, Bolivia</image:title>
<image:caption>At more than 4,000m or 14,000ft this astonishing region of Bolivia is known as the altiplano or high plain. A geological crucible, with volcanic activity still spewing minerals from the earth's bowels, it is like exploring a different planet. Here, a volcanic geyser is explored during a road trip from Salay de Uyuni to the Atacama in Chile and then on into northern Argentina.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Looking straight out onto the Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga mountains, Rwanda, the view from the beautiful rooms at Bisate Lodge are truly unique. The previous day we'd been trekking in these same hills in search of the renowned Mountain Gorilla. More than 20 family groups live in these hills, in a growing population whose survival and support comes from the carefully managed and tightly controlled tourist visits. Our search with skilled local guides was a great success. On leaving the forest we could spot Bisate Lodge not so far away.</image:caption>
